Q What is prosthodontics?
A Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the restoration and replacement of missing teeth and parts of the jaw (often using dentures or bridges).
Q What is a prosthodontist?
A A Prosthodontist is a dental professional who creates, restores, and replaces human teeth. After completing four years of dental school, a prosthodontist completes three additional years of training in a post-doctoral program. It is one of the nine recognized specialties by the American Dental Association. Working as the “Architect” of a dental treatment plan, Prosthodontists collaborate with general dentists and other specialists to treat each individual dental situation.
Q What are implants?
A Implants are artificial replacement or substitutes for natural tooth roots. A tooth consists of a crown and root. The crown is the part visible in the mouth. The crown is supported by the root encased in the jaw bone. Implants are placed so that a prosthetic tooth can be attached. They can also be placed to support a denture are in combination of the two.
Q What are cosmetic veneers?
A Veneers are thin ceramic covers for the teeth which can beautifully change their appearance. They in fact strengthen worn teeth and those with fillings. Many people truly enjoy the “Makeover” brought about by veneers.
Q What are crowns?
A Crowns are actually larger veneers made of a variety of materials to replace and repair broken teeth. Different materials are used for the demands of each condition.
Q Who needs dentures?
A If you have lost most or all of your teeth, you are a perfect candidate for complete dentures. If you still have some natural teeth remaining, a partial denture is recommended to help improve chewing ability, speech, and support for facial muscles.
Q Are there any prosthodontic associations?
A Yes. The American College of Prosthodontists, The American Prosthodontic Society, and The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics are all prosthodontic associations.
